'Looking Up' - Image by Hal Lasko

Blog post by Katy Hurst, Head of Client Engagement

My inspiration this week comes from this story about how Ryan Lasko taught his 82 year-old Grandfather, Hal, how to use Microsoft Paint. This allowed him to continue creating the art that was his life passion, and was hampered by failing eyesight before he discovered Paint. He carried on ‘Paint-ing’ right up until he passed away a few days shy of his 99th birthday.

As you may be aware, Microsoft recently announced that Paint is one of the features that will be removed in the next Windows 10 update. I’m sure those of us from a ‘certain generation’ fondly remember playing with Paint on one of the few computers that existed in the IT room at school (usually when you were meant to be typing something boring on Word!), but this story has reminded me of the way tech can really impact on peoples' lives.

Of course with the radical advances in technology more and more peoples' lives can be hugely improved. For example in Rwanda a company called Zipline is using drones to deliver blood to remote medical centres, saving lives on a daily basis, and this is just the start of how the drones could make a huge impact on rural healthcare globally.

Another life-changing technology is Aira, a remote personal assistant service designed to help those who are visually impaired achieve independence. Aira uses a combination of Google Glass and a human agent, who is able to describe the wearer’s surroundings, track the user’s location on a map or even read a restaurant menu. Just think what a difference that could make to someone’s life.

Here at Inspired we pride ourselves on working closely with our clients in the tech world, to really understand their products and help them to tell their unique stories to their audiences in a clear and ‘human’ way. And I don’t think we can ever have enough of these reminders of how ‘human’ technology can be.
