Inspiration Everywhere: Who Knows What The Future Holds?

Last week I officially graduated from Bournemouth University with a degree in Events Management. Having left university in June, graduating in November felt like a lifetime away but, as with most things, it came (and went) very quickly.

My graduation experience was memorable for very many reasons. First and foremost, it was lovely to be reunited with friends and with Bournemouth, the place I’ve called home for the last few years. It was also great to catch up with lecturers and course mates, filling them in on life after university. Of course, crossing the stage and officially receiving my degree was momentous and truly signified that the last four-year chapter in my life had come to an end. A bittersweet moment.

I expected these experiences to happen. What I didn’t expect was to hear a speech from Dr Lucy Shuker on receiving an honorary doctorate. Lucy is a three-time Paralympic Wheelchair Tennis Player and Double Paralympic Bronze Medallist. After a motorbike accident, Lucy was paralysed from the waist down and turned to Wheelchair Tennis in 2002.

Lucy is, without doubt, an inspiration. She spoke about graduating from Surrey University years earlier in a hospital wheelchair and a back brace - not knowing whether she’d ever be able to walk again. Later that evening, she was told she wouldn’t. On hearing this news, Lucy said she felt as though she’d hit rock bottom.

Instead of giving up though, Lucy focused on maximising what she could do rather than thinking about what she couldn’t, setting herself small goals and then setting more once she’d achieved them. Seeing how far Lucy has come, from what could only have been a sad, scary and lonely place, to where she is now and what she has achieved is incredible and has given me another reason to fondly look back on my graduation.

Lucy’s message is a simple one:

Although you never know what life is going to throw at you, concentrate on becoming the very best version of yourself you can be.

Lucy’s speech touched many people, you could tell by glancing around the room. It was, what we call here at Inspired, a PING moment. Lucy managed to spark a flash of inspiration, generating an emotional response with the audience and creating a catalyst for change. For all of us in the room, and especially those who were graduating, it really struck a chord. Graduation symbolises the end of a lot of things. We no longer have Bournemouth as a safety blanket and none of us can be sure what will happen in the future. We therefore should take Lucy’s advice and concentrate on becoming the very best version of ourselves. Who knows what the future holds!
